Smoothing Out Scrolling: A SmoothScroll JS Demo

In our ongoing efforts to provide seamless scrolling experiences, we're excited to present a new smooth scrolling JavaScript demonstration (JS demo). This demo showcases a refined approach to achieving smooth scrolling without relying on jQuery. Instead, we'll utilize pure JavaScript to create a buttery-smooth scrolling effect.

The Problem with Smooth Scrolling

In our previous attempts at creating a smooth scrolling experience, we encountered an issue where the scrollerProxy's setter needed to synchronize the actual scroll position of the page with the 'fake' content scroll. However, doing so directly would create a loop due to the main ScrollTrigger being set up to smooth out the real scroll position. This led to a funky behavior that we're glad to have resolved.

The Solution: Sensing User Intervention

To address this issue, we employed a technique that checks if the user (or another external influence) has taken control of the scrolling. If so, it kills the snap transition. We've updated the smoothScroll() function to sense this condition and work around it by setting the actual scroll position of the page in conjunction with the scrollerProxy's setter.

You'll notice that the snapping logic already employs an internal technique that checks if the scroll position matches or is close to the last set by the snap tween. We've updated the smoothScroll() function to sense this condition and work around it.
